Technical Questions regarding IM2 Internet Broadband (3G):

Q1 What does mean of IM2 Broadband Internet Services?
A1. IM2 Internet Broadband is one of IM2 product to serve the customers in hi-speed internet access up to 2.6 Mbps, utilizing Indosat 3G network. With this media, customers are able to use their user id and password to access another IM2 services such as dial-up access via PT. Telkom telephony system, hotspot, and also cellular CDMA like StarOne and Fren.
For this time, the broadband media available are Indosat 3G Network. IM2 is going to develop its broad band access networking both by partnering with the other operators or by developing its own broadband network.
Q2 What is the relation of IM2 Internet Broadband with 3G Indosat Broadband?
A2. IM2 Internet Broadband uses Indosat 3G network. Therefore, IM2 Internet Broadband and 3G Indosat Broadband are using the same wireless network to access internet. Each product has their own features. You could review the product definition in their product explanation accordingly.

Offline:
IM2 + Multi access method: one user-id/password could be used for vary of access method (dial-up, hotspot, CDMA). Direct routing to IIX and International. Local access could be faster( (detik.com, republika.co.id, kompas.com).
  - Capability of USIM for 3G is limited to “data only” (voice call, video call, and SMS/MMS features are disabled). However, on sufficient speed access, it could be operated for VOIP or video conference/chat.
Indosat + The accepted USIM could be operated as voice call, video streaming, and SMS/MMS, and also data (Internet access).
  - Not multi access.
Link to IIX indirectly.

Q3 What are the advantages of your service?
A3. Some of our service advantages are as follows:
  1. Hi-speed access through 3G/HSDPA network (High Speed Downlink Packet Access).
  2. If the 3G signal unreachable or not available, user could roam to GPRS signal in similar zone with the ready-service zone of 3G networking, with the same tariff per KB like 3G access service.
  3. The same User id/password could be used for login in another IM2 access method such as dial-up, hotspot/wifi, Fren (CDMA), Starone (CDMA), and also roaming Wifi/3G (in progress) in countries that has IM2 partner. Charging access of 3G is using volume-based method, therefore, customers are more convenience in accessing web page of Internet and reading/writing their e-mail without hasted by the access time.
  4. Subscription charge could be functioned for whole access method with specified re-count, just as volume based package price as priority. When the volume accessed is still less than quota, the remains (leftover in IDR) could be used for non 3G access.
Q4 What the different of 3G for cellular with 3G Internet Broadband?
A4. As per network used, both products are similar. IM2 (3G) Internet Broadband is utilizing 3G cellular networking for accessing Internet. But each product has its own advantages.
Q5 What the different of 3G Broadband with the other broadband, such as cable broadband and CDMA broadband or Wi-Fi?
A5. Compared to cable broadband, the difference is on mobility access side. 3G access is more mobile of course. Compared to CDMA access (in this case, to the internet service provider via CDMA networking such Fren/Esia/StarOne), the difference is on the speed. But if the CDMA service has migrated to 3G (EVDO), its different is only at the technology and standard behind, from user side, it would be just the same. On another feature they are of course different, for example on tariffs, network availability, network quality, and also coverage. And compared to Wi-Fi, the difference especially on mobility and coverage. 3G is definitely wider and more mobile than Wifi/Hotspot.
Q6 What does the technical tools which shall be required to access 3G broadband services? Are there any specification of PC and Notebook so that they would compatible with the 3G broadband access tools?
A6. Basically no require for specific tools. Notebook which has Pentium 3 spec providing PCMCIA slot or USB port could use datacard or USB modem 3G and accessing this service.
For Mac/Apple, minimum version of Mac OSX is 10.3 and recently they could only use USB Modem by Huawei and GlobeTrotter by Option.
Q7 How does 3G Internet Broadband access works?
A7. Briefly, our 3G internet Broadband shall work as follows:
  1. Customers who use CPE (modem) shall dial-up to 3G through BTS they’ve accessed;
  2. BTS forward the connection to the routers through a machine/server called GGSN;
  3. GGSN will forward this connection to APN (Access Point) of Indosatm2 furthermore for doing AAA (Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting) by RADIUS server;
  4. If it authorized for access, the connection will be granted then shall given IP and another connection setting (like IP DNS);
  5. Customers/users online and connect to internet.
Q8 How much the maximum and minimum speed that could be reached by user to access this 3G Internet Broadband? What about the quality of Uplink and Downlink?
A8. Using recent HSDPA technology (implemented by Indosat), maximum speed user could get the speed up to 2.6 Mbps shared (In theory up to 3.6 Mbps, moreover for next generation of. 3.5G/HSDPA could reach up to 14.4 Mbps). Note: Current frequency license has 5 MHz in bandwidth.
And minimum speed which shared to user well-heeled around 10 kbps for international access and 100 kbps to IIX access.
Q9 What if I couldn’t get 3G signal? Does the connection would suddenly off?
A9. No. The system would automatically switch to GPRS connection and the connection endures even on slower speed than 3G. (Check the setting confirmation).
Q10 What errors which frequently happen on this connection?
A10. The errors are:
  1. Network busy may cause the attempt for signing-in to 3G cellular system for internet connection couldn’t be granted. It’s like a message “network busy” that appear on GSM network when users try to connect.
  2. User-id in “hung” condition. Which is means user-id recognized as log-in recorded in RADIUS (IM2 login verfication system), though user isn’t logging in. It might be caused of users that disconnect their access without switching off their connection properly (for example: caused of computer suddenly shut down, or the electricity suddenly off), or it might be happen due to the disconnection not fluently end (system mistaken). However, our system has adjusted for idle timeout in 30 minutes, then user will automatically be logged-out, therefore user in hung condition will automatically logout and could re-login. You could also contact our customer service to ask for immediate logout.
Q11 Why does my User ID couldn’t be used for connection?
A11. It might be caused by many reason. If all setting is already right, then the last possibility is user-id in hung condition.
Q12 Are there any indicators from data card when the signal or connection isn’t work well? What the means of blinking red LED on data card/modem?
A12. Blinking red LED means there’s data transfer and it doesn’t show quality of connection. The quality of connection could be done by doing:
  1. Ping test (ex: ping 202.155.0.15)
  2. Trace route test (command tracert in Windows command window)
  3. Bandwidth test (www.indosatm2.com/bandwidthmeter)
Q13 Which is better between PCMCIA Datacard or USB Modem?
A13. In term of connection function, both of these modems are similar. But from the flexibility and another feature such as user-friendly modem, it depends on customer’s preference. For example there’s a customer who wants to do the connection by both PC and notebook, so they will be advised to choose USB modem. But another wants to the practicability and device integrated with their notebook, so PCMCIA would be more convenient. Or if there any customers who wants 3G wireless router that could be used to share by WiFi, the data card would more suitable, because Wireless-G Router (ex: Linksys WRT54G3G product) is only could be worked with PCMCIA datacard.
Q14 Why does my data card easy to get warmer? Is that warm could may cause damages to my data card?
A14. The technology that used for 3G/UMTS/HSDPA is WCDMA (Wideband CDMA). As another CDMA technology, it is use wide band spectrum to transmission of data and utilizing their different code as diversifications on each communication link. Similar to CDMA telephone system, this kind of communication enquire of large energy, therefore the device will get warmer faster due to hi-energy consumed. The device has been designed so that the warm/hot that might rise on device cannot damage the device. However, it would be better if you confine the usage of modem/data card as defined in manual guide (only for home or office use).
Q15 Did the data card I receive have guarantee from IM2? What if it damage in less than a year?
A15. Yes, it does. Please return to IM2 office and you will get the substitute.
(Terms and conditions applied).
Q16 Can I replace my user id by my own? Or should I confirm to IM2?
A16. You are not able to rename your user-id by yourself. You have to ask for a replacement form. On the other hand, you could change your own password, and it’s recommended to change your password periodically to avoid userid/password (access) abuse/misuse.
Q17 What if I forgot my password? Could it be reset? What does the requirements?
A17. Yes you could. Please contact our customer service.
Q18 What if there’re hassles in my internet connection? Who should I contact with? Could your technical support come to my place where I belong?
A18. You could contact our Customer Service center in number 021-78566900. If all of troubleshoot given by our CSO still can’t solve your connection problems, we are pleased to come and help you.
Q19 I’d like to know the setting for 3G connection!
A19. There’s setting guide inside of the manual operation. If you still find problems, please contact our customer service officer.
Basically connection setting the IM2 Internet Broadband via 3G Indosat explained as follows:
a. Dial number : *99#
b. User ID : your user-id
c. Password : your password
d. APN (static) : indosatm2
e. Authentification : PAP

Recently we’re in effort to enable the modem and USIM utilization using Dial-Up Networking (DUN).
By DUN, it will just need setting up as dial-up setting that requires:
a. Dial number : *99#
b. User ID : your user-id
c. Password : your password

This is possible because Indosat 3G Network has recognized USIM number (identity) and forwarded to internet connection via indosatm2 APN.
Q20 If my e-mail id isn’t indosat.net.id address, am I still could send e-mail using 3G connection? What does the setting up I should notice in sending e-mail?
A20. You wouldn’t find any trouble if you send e-mail based on web, because you’ll need HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) access only , for example when you use e-mail from Yahoo Mail! (mail.yahoo.com).
If you use email client (such as: Outlook, Pegasus, Calypso), then you’ll need specified setting like pop3 and SMTP server. This thing actually isn’t so different much with another type of connection whether it use LAN, dial-up, cable modem, etc.
Incoming mail : pop.indosat.net.id or pop3.hostmail.net.id
Outgoing mail : smtp.indosat.net.id
pop3.hostmail.net.id is a virtual e-mail address, a room you placed your mailbox, for example on another ISP.
Sample of setting in Microsoft Outlook:

Pleae be noticed that for pop3 server the setting must be accustomed to your e-mail address, and for SMTP server (for sending) usually the ISP delimit on its access, therefore, when you access internet through IM2 Internet Broadband, SMTP setting must be set as above setting, because IP address you got from 3G connection server has been granted the access authorization by our SMTP server.

Q21 Does your service use multiple login feature/system?
A21. No. Just 1 user id could login at a time, even in 3G network or another access method. On the other words, there’s only one user-id that could be functioned at a time on authentification access system AAA IM2 (RADIUS).
Q22 How to find out how much the speed I’ve got? What should I test?
A22. To make some speed test from your PC/Notebook to IM2 server, you can use webpage: www.indosatm2.com/bandwidthmeter.
And for speed test from your PC/Notebook to International server, you can use webpage www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/.
Please note that bandwidth meter (speed test) just one of indicator which couldn’t reflects entire connection/networking quality.
Q23 Does the access quality would depend on location (indoor or outdoor) and weather conditions?
A23. Frequency that is used on data transmission for 3G/UMTS/HSDPA technologies is uplink frequency between 1950 – 1955 MHz, and downlink frequency between 2140 – 2145 MHz that are in S-band category. Practically, at this frequency signal acceptance is quite sensitive to “position”. For example, in one space (certain case), behind the door, the signal is unreachable, but when you go a bit outside the signal is well-caught. It happens due to frequency characteristic when it’s getting high, generally will more demanding to “line of sight” condition or checking on directly to signal sources (transmitter antenna/BTS). To weather condition, especially to hard rain, signal on this frequency is not affected.
Q24 Is there 3G modem driver for Linux OS?
A24. Yes, there is. For Linux OS, You could follow these steps:
  1. Download kernel source 2.6.20 at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/linux-2.6.20-rc5.tar.bz2 (Because it’is not released yet, please pick the RC or Release Candidate version)
  2. Do config and compile the kernel.
  3. Plug USB Modem Huawei. Messages will show up in the dmesg as follows:
Jan 15 13:15:43 kernel: usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 5
    Jan 15 13:15:43 kernel: usb 3-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Jan 15 13:15:43 kernel: option 3-1:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
Jan 15 13:15:43 kernel: usb 3-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB1
  4. Then download the following tool to ease next step: http://www.kanoistika.sk/bobovsky/archiv/umts/huaweiAktBbo-i386.out. If it is downloaded then do “chmod +x”. Then run ./huaweiAktBbo-i386.out.
Note: The tool is to activate the modem function in order to be able to accessed by wvdial or other similar application.
  5. Then we can use wvdialconf for probing and then we can proceed like a common dial-up.

A41. For access via 3G the counting is based on volume KB download and upload. the charge is IDR. About 0,5/KB or Rp. 512/MB (Please note that 1MB= 1024 KB with smallest denomination charge is KB), and for access through another method such as dial-up, hotspot/wifi, CDMA is still using time-based scheme.
Q42 Does the access charge by 3G and GPRS has same tariff?
A42. Yes, it has the same tariff, though in part of quota or exceed usage. This thing isn’t different much as pick-up cost of goods per kilogram. For example, pick-up charge is IDR 1.000/kg, then even in narrow or wide road the cost is just same, in fact per kg is need cost IDR 1,000. Indeed, delivery goods through wide road/boulevard are faster than narrow road.
Q43 How much the charge I should pay if there’s over usage from quota?

A49. If we received confirmation which explained that you’re already fulfill your payment, your account will be re-activated in less than 24 hours.
Q50 Could my user ID be used for another connection, for example: HotSpot? How much does it cost? Is it included to the package choice you offered? Or there will be separate billing?
A50. Yes, it could. Your user-id could be used for HotSpot access, the tariff is IDR 9.500 per hour. If your access via 3G (volume based) less than specified limit quota (as package) then amount of residual quota (proportional) could be used to reduce your non 3G access cost. Example: You’re subscribing for You! Package as much IDR 350.000, 1GB (1024MB). Then in a month access you’re using 512 MB quota (or IDR 175.000), HotSpot access (IDR 190.000), then you shall pay as much the package charge plus HotSpot charge reduced by 3G residual cost or IDR 350.000 + (190.000 – 175.000) = IDR 365.000 (+VAT 10%).
Q51 If I already become subscriber to another product and I’m interested in subscribing 3G, what I suppose to do? Can I upgrade into 3G? What the requirements?
A51. Yes, you can. It’s not upgrade but migrates (from dial-up to IM2 Internet Broadband). If you’re enrolling the promo program, you must pursue the existing requirement (see preceding number).
